ID-10063995Kids with ADHD often exhibit impulsive behavior. They have problems with sitting still or focusing their attention on something because they are easily distracted. They can’t stop talking and they’re always on the go.

Your ADHD child’s impulsivity can often be difficult to deal with, but there are some simple things you can do to help manage it.

How to Manage ADHD Impulsivity

  • First, try to set simple, easy-to-understand instructions that your child can follow. Set expectations so they know what is and isn’t acceptable.
  • Be clear about the consequences your child will face if they lose control and act impulsively.
  • If your child is older, explain to them that every decision has a negative or positive outcome and that he should always aim for the positive one.
  • Establish a reward system. Be generous with your praise when your child has followed instructions or done something right.
  • Make sure your child gets plenty of fresh air and exercise, and has space for physical activity so he can let out all his negative emotions.
  • In a meltdown situation where your child has lost control, remove him from the situation and allow him plenty of time to calm down. Keep your tone of voice and language neutral.
  • Learn meditation, and encourage your child to learn it too. Even simple breathing exercises can help.
  • Join a support group in your local community or online to meet other parents who are experiencing the same struggle as you. This can help you manage your own emotions towards the situation and towards your child.

As the parent of an ADHD child, your role is very important in molding them and helping them live a fulfilling and successful life despite their condition. Often our kids can’t control or even understand their own behaviour and feelings so your role is to be there to guide them and manage them.
